Red Bull's Max Verstappen was nominated for the best men's athlete at the 2022 Laureus World Sports Awards as rivals Mercedes-AMG Petronas became one of the best team candidates for the award for the world's most prestigious sporting person.
Verstappen, who won his first Formula 1 world title last year, will compete with other world sports such as swimmer Caeleb Dressel, marathon runner Eliud Kipchoge, tennis player Novak Djokovic, footballer Robert Lewandowski and NFL legend Tom Brady.
Verstappen won the title last year after beating Lewis Hamilton in the controversial season-ending race in Abu Dhabi, bringing Red Bull to his first title since 2013 and becoming the first Dutch world champion.
Meanwhile, Hamilton in recent years has won three Laureus awards, the last in 2021 in the "Athlete Advocate Award" category.
Hamilton has also been voted the 2020 best sportsman with Lionel Messi, and Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year in 2008.
Her team, Mercedes, will compete with the Argentine soccer team, Italy soccer team, Barcelona women's soccer team, China jump team and the Milwaukee Bucks basketball team in the team of the year categories.
Mercedes are the first team to win the F1 constructors' title for the eighth year in a row and have dominated the V6 turbo hybrid era since 2014.
Mercedes has won the Laureus award as the best team in 2018.
The Laureus awards ceremony will be held this spring and the winners will be announced through a virtual ceremony, according to the official Laureus.com website as published by Antara.
