Director Catherine Hardwicke Gives Her Home Tour Podcast Where 'The Batman' Star And 'Spencer' Actress Kiss During Auditions. Both are 21 and 17 years old, respectively.
Director Catherine Hardwicke recently recalled auditions for "Twilight" lead stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in 2007. Stewart was only 17 years old when he was considered to be opposite the then 21-year-old Pattinson in the teen vampire film.
Hardwicke was worried about the kiss because Stewart was a minor at the time. Hardwicke gave a podcast a tour of his home where he first auditioned for "Twilight" in 2007. He then escorted the show crew to his room where the "The Batman" star and "Spencer" actress kissed during their screen test.
"Rob and Kristen do auditions here in bed," he explained. "They did a kissing scene and he fell and landed on this floor."
The "Red Riding Hood" director later recalled how Pattinson, now 35, looked when he first stepped foot into his house for an audition.
"Rob and Kristen auditioned in my bed, kiss scene," she recalls. "Rob loved it so much he fell out of bed. I was like, 'Son, calm down.' And I was there shooting with my little video camera."
He was also sure that the two did have a lot of good chemistry for the film. But unfortunately, Kristen at that time was 17 years old. "So I remember telling Rob, 'By the way, Kristen is 17 years old. In our country, it's illegal to have sex...' And he was like, 'Oh, okay, whatever,'" she added.
Following the audition process, Pattinson's casting had to be approved by "Twilight" writer Stephenie Meyer. According to the podcast, Meyer has "an arrangement with Summit (Entertainment that includes) a veto over casting decisions."
